Maria Tippett
Contributor Information
Maria Tippett was a historian specializing in Canadian art history. Her classic biography Emily Carr (1979) won the Governor General’s Award for English-language non-fiction. Her book Sculpture in Canada: A History (2017) surveys the canon of Canadian sculpture – from the prehistoric to present era. Tippett considers the influence of the church, governmental impact, and that of special interest groups on Canadian sculptures including Jeffrey Rubinoff. The size and materiality of sculptural works, exemplified by Rubinoff’s large-scale steel sculptures, often make them more vulnerable to cultural, economic, and political forces.
In 2015, Maria Tippett convened the 8th annual JRSP Company of Ideas Forum, considering sculpture in relation to writing, music, photograph, and modernism.
