Early Works
1971-75 | The early works were first displayed at the Ontario Science Centre. They explore a visual poetry of contrast between angular and fluid forms, and between vectors of motion. In the 1970s Rubinoff started to develop a language of counterpoint in ‘positive’ plastic form and ‘negative’ space.
Early Work 1 | 1971
Jeffrey Rubinoff
A 242 Cor-ten steel – Welded plate, H 4ft W 2.5ft L 4ft
This work begins to explore the play of angular planes of the tetrahedron, which was not commonly used in sculpture at the time. It conveys a sense of motion through molten eruptions, which contrast with otherwise geometric forms.
This was the first work Rubinoff completed in his studio on Hornby Island. It followed a long hiatus and represents a break with the aims of his previous work.

The second piece in Series 1 further refines the interaction of multiple linear visual melodies. In this piece Rubinoff starts to explore the spiral spatial organization that proved central to his goal of achieving a successful visual counterpoint in a 360-degree viewing hemisphere.
